Episode 02: It's Great to Create!

Renowned artist Jon Burgerman talks about social media, social commentary and creativity.

Jon Burgerman is a UK-born, NYC-based artist with a following of over 100,000. He is one of the leading figures in the ‘doodle’ art style and has worked across murals, sculptures, canvases, prints, apparel, and toys. He has also published a book, SPLAT!, and has a segment on Skillshare. In this podcast, Jon talks about managing expectations on social media, and how to create, and enjoy the creative process.

It’s great that the environment becomes people’s playground for experimentation. With stickers, they can manipulate the environment in whatever way they want to, and make the everyday unique and exciting.


Confidence and Creating
As we grow older, we tend to start measuring ourselves against the standard of others and limiting what we can do. Like how creating for kids was easy when they were not limited by their self-consciousnesses, Jon advises people to not be bound by standards. Be delighted in the material and the process of creating instead of being fixated on the final result.

Technology

Jon talks about the need to be disciplined in the way that creators use social media, and how it is important not to get sucked in and obsessed by the metrics. Treat uploads like little projects, and keep in mind that you do not need to have a large following or crazy numbers to make good work.
