Episode 21: A Virtual World Builder’s Thoughts on The Metaverse

Race Krehel is a Singapore based digital artist who uses technology to bring to life inspiring visions of the world of tomorrow. Having worked at Lucasfilm, he is currently Creative Director of Metamo Industries.

What excites Race about the Metaverse

“I'm trying to tell some stories about what the future might be like before the real world actually catches up.”

Virtual events and festivals

“But I also think that for the most part, it seems like people are really just itching to get back outside.”

“We just did Crypto Art Week Asia, and that one was really interesting. It was spread out across a bunch of different cities. There was a physical component to it here in Singapore. And I think it's a good example of how you can simultaneously do a virtual and a physical show.”

Advice to brands experimenting with the Metaverse

“But the difference between Epic Games and a start-up doing it is just a couple billion dollars.”

“The first question that I pose anybody who comes to me with a concept like that is do you have seven figures of budget. And if you don't, it's probably not worth your time. It is easier to do than it ever has been, but by no means does that mean, it's a simple thing to pull off.”

“The same kind of just little glitches that can pop up in a in a game launch are the same types of things that can suddenly pop up in your virtual event and really derail the whole thing before even gets started.”

Humans and the Metaverse

“Let me explain it to you in three dimensions versus two - the more depth and perspective you can give to a concept that you're describing, the easier it is to actually convey the essence of it.”

”We have coined the term ‘augmentia’, like dementia…the glassed over eyes of people who are so distracted by the digital world that they aren't even aware of what's going on around them.”
